Adelaide Escapes: Fleurieu Peninsula

Looking for an adventure without the need for a long road trip? There are numerous 4WD Adelaide escapes for off-road caravans offering both adrenaline-fuelled experiences and peaceful downtime. So, you can spend more time making memories and being spontaneous and avoid backseat conflict by minimising travel time and maximising fun, when you plan a family trip close to home.
Coorong National Park
Only 200km from Adelaide, the short drive means maximum adventure time with over 30 diverse activities, from 4WD tracks and hiking to scuba diving, wildlife interaction, hot springs, and food experiences.
The Coorong caters for campers of varying experience and ability, with beginner and intermediate tracks. Not all are suitable for towing hybrid caravans, depending on the season, so check the Coorong National Park website before you travel.
There are numerous 4WD-accessible tracks for vehicles and off-road caravans; however, be aware of soft or shifting sand, and limited phone access in low-lying areas. Long Road and Loop Road campsites are caravan-specific, so they are a safe bet year-round.
Port Willunga
Wake up and feel like a last-minute adventure? 35km from Adelaide, Port Willunga is a convenient and exciting destination. Sellicks Hill Track is a popular beginner's track that is easily accessible to hybrid caravans and 4WDs. A bitumen-to-dirt track with some slopes and occasional rocks, and steep side drop-offs worth approaching cautiously for the epic hilltop views. However, all ratings say that it is beginner-friendly, so don’t let caution put you off.
Get back to the Port Willunga Caves in time to view the sunset and see why this is one of the most photographed beaches in South Australia.
Camping is limited without permits or bookings through 4WD adventure companies. For a quick and easy option, the tourist park in Port Willunga offers powered sites.
Sellicks Beach
53kms from Adelaide, Sellicks Beach is one of the rare beaches that you can drive on in South Australia. Beach driving takes skill and knowledge, so it's important to know your vehicle and its capabilities. Deflate your tyres, consider low range, engage diff locking and ensure you have the equipment needed if you get bogged. Beaches are unpredictable; however, Sellicks Beach is rated safe for 2WD vehicles. Silver Sands Beach, close by, is also 2WD and 4WD friendly, so, by extension, off-road caravans friendly. While you cannot camp directly on Sellicks Beach, options vary from secluded farm sites to tourist parks close by.
Adelaide offers diverse 4WD adventures nearby year-round, from the easy-going dirt track of Port Willunga to the scenic beach-driving experience of Sellicks Beach, to the exhilarating, off-the-beaten-track Coorong National Park. Adelaide has a choose-your-own-adventure solution for you and your off-road caravans, with options for every kind of adventure seeker.
