Siena - A Highlight Reel

  • Written by Will Rogers
A walk down the cobble stone streets twisting their way past the shuttered houses, a drink overlooking Piazza Del Campo, a plate of delicious pappardelle con lepre, a visit to Duomo di Siena or simply admiring the stunning panoramic view from atop Torre del Mangia are all a sure-fire way to have you thankful you added the unmissable city that is Siena to your travel itinerary.

Piazza del Campo.

Piazza del Campo is one of the finest examples of medieval European architecture, acting as a stark point of difference to most Italian cities, thus, creating a very different feel to most destinations in the region. The square is a natural congregating area for locals and tourists alike, who come to wine and dine in the many restaurants that border, or grab a pizza and relax in the centre. Twice a year it plays host to the horse race, Palio di Siena, which sees 10 horses race around the outer edge of the city square dressed in colours that represent 10 of the 17 city wards, or Contrade. The race, along with the pageant, Corteo Storico, which is held after, attracts thousands of European gambling fans or simplepassionates every year and is a must if you are lucky enough to be visiting when it’s on (July 2nd or August 16th).

The Duomo.

The Duomo (also known as the Siena Cathedral) is a medieval style, gothic cathedral is without a doubt the star of Siena. It is no surprise that since construction in the 13th century it has attracted thousands of visitors every year. The Siena Cathedral displays some of the most beautiful, intricate exterior architecture of all the Italian landmarks. The interior feature of a unique design of white and black marble stripes is significant for the symbolism of the colours of Siena. Archecture aside, the Duomo also houses a significant Siena treasure; the famous Piccolimini Library. A beautiful library dedicated to Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Pope Pius II), to preserve the collection of literature that he had produced during his time in Rome. It is decorated with beautiful frescoes by Pinturicchio, a sculptural group of the 'Three Graces' and display cases by Antonio Barili. Defintely a must-see in Siena.
Tickets to visit both the Siena Cathedral and the Piccolimini are available at the ticket booth outside the landmark.
