Hideaway Cabarita Beach

  • Written by Louise Terry

Bell Tents, Beach Picnics, Craft Beer, Art and Artisan Food - Get a Taste of the Tweed This Spring!

Beachside glamping hideaway

New to the Tweed in October is an Australian first 'glamping by the sea' experience in Cabarita Beach. The Hideaway is a boutique outdoor resort built amongst natural bush surrounds with ocean breezes and views out to Wollumbin Mount Warning.

Edging on to the natural corridor of Cudgen Nature Reserve, a green pathway to the blue surf waves of Cabarita Beach, The Hideaway has a warm and hip village vibe and caters for families, romantic escapes, wellness retreats and team building getaways.

In true village style, the experience is communal, with chic en-suites and a communal kitchen hosted in nifty, reworked shipping containers, along with bean bag chill zones and fire-pit circles perfect for quiet story-telling under the stars.

The Hideaway offers three styles of bell tents, including the lead-in What a Classic, the more spacious Bigger is Better for up to four people and the luxurious Plush Deluxe. All tents are decked out with all you need for a good night's sleep, complete with comfy Koala beds, lighting, floor rugs, tripod fans, soft furnishings and plush bath towels.

Blue Ginger Picnics

Combining the elegance of picturesque picnics with modern-day luxuries is at the heart of what Blue Ginger Picnics is all about. Think well-stocked baskets of champagne, rustic bread with artisan cheeses and comfortable, snap-worthy settings all served up at a stunning Tweed beach, creek or mountain location.

Create the perfect alfresco picnic by choosing a package from the starter Le Petit (BYO special person and own food), Le Chic (100% local foods provided) or Le Grand (to thoroughly impress said special person) then select your ideal spot, from ocean view to a peaceful creek or relaxed countryside.

There's a menu for brunch, lunch or sunset, all featuring local and seasonal produce with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free available. Blue Ginger Picnics is also a plastic-free business, caring for community and environment, using locally hand-crafted ceramic tableware, linen napkins and recycled barn-door tables.

Whether it's an upcoming anniversary, birthday, proposal or just-because celebration, Blue Ginger Picnics helps to create stand-out moments and lifelong memories.

New craft beer tour in Murwillumbah

Think Stone & Wood and you naturally think Byron Bay, with the delicious brew born and raised in the Bay, but did you know that the team also has a large brewing operation in the Tweed? Stone & Wood's second brewing facility in Murwillumbah looks out to Mount Warning (Wollumbin) and is where most of the company's beer is produced.

Now enthusiasts of this refreshing drop can take a tour of the 'Murbah Brewery' on a new half day craft beer discovery tour with Mount Warning Tours. The brewery tour starts with the Stone & Wood story, followed by a tour of the Tweed facility and exclusive tastings of pilot batches and a few of the beers on offer at the Stone & Wood staff bar.

Tour-goers will also learn about the history of brewing in the Tweed region and sample local craft beers at the Haven Bar Taphouse and the Pickled Pig Micro-Brewery, ending with a traditional pub lunch in Murwillumbah. Cheers to that!

Taste goodness grown in the green caldera

What could be better than a weekend of bespoke food experiences curated especially by farms, food producers and restaurants with a focus on serving fresh and local fare?

The Tweed Artisan Food Weekend, from 18-20 October, will showcase ingredients unique to the Tweed and reveal the authentic people, place and produce of the region. Sample farm-fresh organic produce, hand-crafted cheeses, local brews, wild-harvested sustainable meat and artisan food and drink.

Events over the weekend are designed to shine a light on the Tweed's artisan producers, from a Stone & Wood Tour and Tasting at the brewery's manufacturing site in Murwillumbah to the Stamp & Grind Sugar Mill Tour in Condong. There's also a range of classes at Temple Door Cooking School in Terranora, a luxury afternoon hosted by award-winning Blue Ginger Picnics with 100% local produce at a Finger Lime Farm and a hands-on farm tour at Sylva Lining Organics.

Not to be missed is a sumptuous long lunch served up at Potager - a Kitchen Garden in Carool, with fresh produce from the Potager farm, Fair Game Wild Venison and a welcome drink from Husk Distillers.

Accommodation packages are available in a hinterland retreat or coastal resort and include local produce hampers along with recommendations for secret picnic spots to graze through the hamper treats.

Country charm and community spirit

It's a breathtaking country drive to Tyalgum in the Tweed hinterland, passing scores of black and white Friesian dairy cows and green paddocks, curving through the undulating landscape with ever-changing views of Mount Warning (Wollumbin) as you round its many sides alongside the clear waters of the Oxley River.

All this peace prepares you well for the conscious-living energy of Tyalgum, boasting so many enterprises it will take some time to explore all that awaits on Coolman Street. If you need more time (always a good idea), there are gorgeous places to overnight here, from heritage homes and farmstays to campsites and nearby rainforest retreats.

Stroll between colourfully stocked gift and vintage stores, shop for books and jewellery hand-made from fossicked stones, browse earth conscious shops, beautiful clothing boutiques and good-looking garden wear.

All this browsing and buying will build an appetite and Tyalgum has you covered here too with the iconic Flutterbies serving satisfying morning teas and meals in an elegant heritage building or under dappled light in the gardens. Nearby, you'll also happen upon a Gin Bar, coffee roaster, bakery, beer brews and Friday night artisan pizzas served with a side of live music.

There's more too - events right throughout the year, curated by the vibrant and innovative Tyalgum community and celebrating creativity, wellness, music, dance, sustainable living, theatre and more.

Take time in your Tweed visit to be impressed by Tyalgum in the heart of the green caldera.

An Exhibition of Love - Tweed Regional Gallery

Curated by Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM, the Tweed Regional Gallery's current major exhibition, Love, is an exploration of love in its multiple forms.

There are so many kinds of love. Romantic love, true love, enduring, affectionate, altruistic, selfless, platonic, erotic, obsessive and manic love. There's the agony of unrequited love and love lost. The memory of a first love, and the grief associated with those loved and no longer with us. There's love for the land and our sense of place in it, and there's the special bonds of parental love. There's even love online.

Responding to the theme of love, the exhibition features works by over 30 contemporary Australian artists including Ben Quilty, Danie Mellor, Euan Macleod, Fiona Lowry, Guy Maestri, Joanna Braithwaite, Joshua Yeldham, Lucas Grogan, Maria Kontis, Michael Cook, Michael Zavros, Patricia Piccinini and Victoria Reichelt.

The Love exhibition is on now through until Sunday 17 November 2019.
