AUSTRALIAN BARS STORM RANKINGS ATTHE WORLD’S 50 BEST BARS 2016

  • *  The Baxter Inn of Sydney is announced Ketel One Vodka Best Bar in Australasia for the third year running
  • Sydney bar Bulletin Place and Melbourne’s The Black Pearl also included in the ranking
  • Australia competes on global level and named joint third best country behind US and UK
  • The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog is crowned the Botran Rum Best Bar in North America & the World
  • Singapore’s Manhattan takes 11th place and Bols Genever Best Bar in Asia Award for the first time

On Thursday 6th October, Drinks International announced its highly anticipated World’s 50 Best Bars Awards 2016. The bars were chosen by an Academy of 476 members from 57 countries; the strongest, most diverse collection of industry experts ever assembled to express their view on the best bars in the world.

The list represents the ultimate guide to the top bars and drinking destinations around the globe, with restaurant bars, speakeasies, hotel bars, and tiki themed venues all contributing to the diverse and eclectic list. This year’s ranking includes bars from 27 cities in 19 countries, with 11 new entries.

Australian bar culture continues to compete on a global scale with three bars in the top 50, making it the joint third most successful country. This is a significant achievement with bars from both Sydney and Melbourne included once again.

Sydney’s The Baxter Inn was voted 12th and took the prize of Ketel One Vodka Best Bar in Australasia for a third year. Launched in 2011, the bar is the brainchild of Anton Forte and Jason Scott.  The Sydney bar holds a whiskey library of over 630 rare and unusual bottles and serves Old Fashioneds on tap to a regular crowd of Sydneyites and cocktail pilgrims.

Also in Sydney and making a fourth appearance in the list is Bulletin Place. Headed by Tim Philips, the daily changing menu of just five cocktails continues to pull the crowds in.

The Black Pearl in Melbourne remains in the top half of the list, fifteen years after opening, and has long been the training ground for some of Australia’s most recognised bartenders.

New York claims the top spot with The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog, the first time the city has taken the title since 2011. Entering the list originally in 2013 and having been in second place for two consecutive years, the co-owners Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry finally clinched the number one spot.

Asia saw an additional two bars join the top 50 this year to bring the region’s total to seven. Speak Low added a Shanghai bar for the first time and Operation Dagger in Singapore joined Tokyo’s High Five, Hong Kong’s Lobster Bar and Quinary. The Bols Genever Best Bar in Asia award changes hands, with Singapore rivals Manhattan at The Regent Hotel taking the crown from city-neighbour 28 Hongkong Street.

Representatives from the world’s leading bars flew into the capital to attend the Awards at Christ Church Spitalfields in London, along with internationally renowned industry figures and celebrity supporters. The World’s 50 Best Bars is the most influential and respected global survey of its kind. The awards are the result of an international industry survey produced by Drinks International, the leading magazine for the global drinks industry.

About 50 Best Bars:

The World’s 50 Best Bars 2016 provides a definitive list of the world’s best drinking venues, voted for by those in the know.  Returning for its eighth year, the list has become the most anticipated release for drinks professionals and the awards are the highlight of the bar industry calendar.

The final list is compiled by votes from an academy of over 476 of the most renowned names in the drinks industry including Alex Kratena, David Wondrich, Hidetsugu Ueno, Dave Broom, Simone Caporale, Dale DeGroff, Jim Meehan, Erik Lorincz, Jörg Meyer, Charles Shumann, David Rios, Anastasia Miller and Jared Brown.  Votes were cast for 652 bars around the world and whittled down to the top 50 to determine the final rankings.
